TouchPal Keyboard for Windows 8 brings Swype-like typing to your slate (video)

TouchPal Keyboard for Windows 8 ports Swypelike typing to your Surface video

Android fans wanting to try a Windows 8 tablet haven't really had the choice of a glide-based keyboard in the vein of SwiftKey Flow or Swype, in part because the OS isn't designed for an easy replacement. After months of teasing, though, CooTek claims to have the remedy with the launch of TouchPal Keyboard for Windows 8. The software naturally centers on the sliding, predictive input method for those who've grown used to typing with one finger versus many. Thankfully, it's not a one-trick pony: the Windows 8 adaptation also includes the components from TouchPal's mobile editions, including an optional split keyboard and plugins. We most like that it's free, which should make it that much easier to skip the Type Cover for many of those considering a Surface Pro.

Tebow nixes speech at church

It seems that Tim Tebow has spent more time so far this offseason speaking at church events then working on his deep routes.

But the Tebow Tour 2013 won't be making one of his scheduled stops. The New York Jets quarterback has backed out of an event at the First Baptist Dallas Church in April, Tebow announced on his Twitter account.

The church is the home of pastor Robert Jeffress, who is no stranger to controversy based on his views of other religions and homosexuality.

Tebow's scheduled appearance drew immediate criticism.? He addressed the situation on Twitter in a series of posts.

"While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ's unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance." Tebow tweeted. "I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day. Thank you for all of your love and support. God Bless!"

The Dallas Morning News first reported on Monday that Tebow was scheduled to appear as part of First Baptist's month-long celebration of the new $130 million expansion and renovation of its downtown Dallas campus, which is home to over 11,000 members.

Jeffress has labeled both Islam and Mormonism as "heresy from the pit of hell," and even called for Mitt Romney to be removed from the most recent Presidential election because he considered Mormonism to be a "cult."

On Thursday, the First Baptist Dallas Church released a statement in regards to Tebow's canceled appearance. While the church was disappointed that Tebow will no longer speak at its event, Jeffress and the establishment did not apologize for their thoughts and views that led to this controversy.

"We are saddened that Mr. Tebow felt pressure to back out of his long-planned commitment to First Baptist Dallas from numerous New York and national sports and news media who grossly misrepresented past comments made by our pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress, specifically related to issues of homosexuality and AIDS, as well as Judaism," the statement read. "As a Christian pastor, Dr. Jeffress takes a biblical approach to moral and social issues, closely following his duty to preach 'the whole counsel of God,' and not just address issues that are politically correct. First Baptist is a church built on the truth of Scripture, even though at times that approach can be perceived as controversial or counter to the prevailing winds of culture.
?
"The reason for the recent media firestorm is not because the Word of God has changed, but because society has changed."

This would have been Tebow's second speaking engagement in Dallas this offseason.?Tebow spoke on Monday in Dallas at the American Airlines Center as part of a large "GameChanger Coaches Leadership Summit."

Google Drive gets file previews, Android app now outfitted with video streaming

Mountain View has just made it easier to peek the contents of Google Drive files on the web with a brand-new preview feature. Now, users will be able to quickly view up to 30 file types (photos, videos, PDFs and more) in a lightbox overlay, and thumb through by clicking right and left arrows within the window. When it comes to documents, folks can zoom in and out, scroll through pages, and even select and copy text. If the update hasn't made it to your account already, Page and Co. say you can expect it to roll out over the next few days. As for the Drive's Android app, it's been updated to let devices wielding Honeycomb or higher stream video saved on the service. According to the changelogs, the application has also been upgraded with performance enhancements, pinch-to-zoom in the presentation viewer and a grab bag of bug fixes and assorted tweaks.

Major powers to make "substantial and serious offer" to Iran

LONDON (Reuters) - Major powers are ready to make "a substantial and serious offer" to Iran during talks next week in return for concessions on its nuclear program, a Western diplomat said on Wednesday.

He declined to give details of the offer - aimed at reviving efforts to reach a diplomatic solution to long-stalled talks over Iran's disputed nuclear work.

"We will take an offer with us which we believe to be a substantial and serious offer," the diplomat said of talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan. "This is an offer which we think has significant new elements in it."

The West has imposed heavy economic sanctions on Iran to persuade it to abandon those parts of its program the powers suspect are intended to give it nuclear weapons capability.

Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is for peaceful, civilian purposes only.

"Diplomats are committed to finding a diplomatic solution, but the government of Iran really has to show that it's doing what it says it's doing," the diplomat said, on condition of anonymity.

The five permanent members of the Security Council along with Germany - the so-called P5+1 - will hold talks with Iran in Almaty on February 26.

Western officials in Washington have told Reuters they plan to offer to ease sanctions barring trade in gold and other precious metals in return for Iran shutting its Fordow uranium enrichment plant - a proposal already rejected by Tehran.

The Western diplomat declined to comment on that, nor to say in what way the offer to be made in Almaty would differ.

Another Western diplomat said hopes for the meeting were not "sky high" but the talks were being viewed as an opportunity to engage with Iran. "It's an open and positive offer and we hope that they will respond," he said.

"We've always offered quite a bit. The original offer in 2008 was a very generous offer, very comprehensive and that is still basically there on the table and what we're offering now is more precision about certain elements of that," he added.

The 2008 offer both acknowledged Iran's right to a civilian nuclear program and recognized its need for broader security guarantees against attack.

SANCTIONS SEEN BITING

Western diplomats argue that sanctions are taking their toll on Iran's economy and hoping as a result the new diplomatic push could succeed where past attempts have failed.

The negotiations held by the P5+1 also follow a renewed offer by the United States to hold direct talks with Iran if it showed it was serious about reining in its nuclear program.

Any broader political dialogue between the United States and Iran would be aimed at reducing mistrust dating back to the 1979 Iranian revolution and seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Such a dialogue would be a means of giving additional momentum to existing negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program.

Iran has given little indication of what it would bring to the table in Almaty.

It rejected the offer of an easing of sanctions on gold trade as unacceptable and its ability to make significant concessions is seen as limited before Iranian presidential elections in June.

It has, however, resumed work to convert small amounts of higher-grade enriched uranium into fuel, a move which would slow its accumulation of stockpiles that could, if enriched further, be used for weapons.

Diplomats say it has also held off from putting into operational additional centrifuges at Fordow where it enriches uranium to 20 percent - a level that can be rapidly turned into weapons-grade material.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to issue shortly its latest report on Iran, which will indicate the size of its stockpiles of enriched uranium and detail other developments in its nuclear program.

Campus Rec: Intramural Sports - Admissions Blog

Post by Jimmy Schiemann

Every time I had to opportunity to I participated in extracurricular activities. Probably my favorite has always been sports, and at NC State I was able to keep playing on a more or less competitive level: Intramural sports.

Intramural sports are basically free tournaments that enrolled students (and faculty) can participate in. My past experience is basically soccer, but there are other choices, like flag football, softball, basketball and others.

Playing this is a lot of fun, as you can build a team with your friends, roommates, neighbors and even classmates (why not?). During my first semester at NC State I made many friends by playing intramural sports. Some student organizations have their own teams that you can join too, which makes such groups the more interesting to join.

This semester, campus recreation read my mind and introduced indoor soccer. My dreams came true.

Indoor Soccer is perfect for this time of the year, where it is usually cold, or it rains and thus forcing outdoor activities to move indoors. As soon as I found out that Indoor Soccer would be added as an intramural sport I gathered my friends and formed not one, but two teams (my original 11v11 team, but since indoor only has 5v5 we had to split the group in two).

Our first match was this Monday night. It was a great victory, 7 to 0.

My Indoor Soccer team this season

Campus Recreation at NC State does a phenomenal job in preparing intramural tournaments for all students interested. They provide referees, equipment etc.

As a student, do not miss out on the opportunity of participating in an intramural sport. Even if you do not have a team, you can always register yourself as a free agent and join a team.

For more information about what options you have as a student at NC State please visit Campus Recreation.

Tony Sheridan, early Beatles associate, dies at 72

BERLIN (AP) ? Tony Sheridan, a British singer who performed with the Beatles during their early years in Hamburg, has died in Germany. He was 72.

Frank Orth, the owner of Wemo Records, a German label that issued his last album, said Sheridan died Saturday. He didn't have details of the cause.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney said on his website that Sheridan "was a good guy who we knew and worked with from the early days in Hamburg."

Sheridan was born in Norwich, England, on May 21, 1940. He went to Hamburg in 1960 with a makeshift band, the Jets ? and during his time in the German port city was backed by the Beatles. Sheridan and the Beatles together recorded "My Bonnie," released in 1962.

Sheridan lived near Hamburg in recent years.

Nokia Lumia Update: Windows Phone 7.8 Live Tiles Issues Identified, Include Battery, Data Drains

By Michael Oleaga / m.oleaga@latinospost.com | First Posted: Feb 18, 2013 11:56 PM EST

(Photo : Nokia) With a two-year T-Mobile contract, the Nokia Lumia 810 costs $99

Microsoft has rolled out the Windows Phone 7.8 update, and issues have been reported.

According to WP7RootTools, Heathcliff74 noticed battery draining and storage issues. He didn't use his phone much on the day following updating to Windows Phone 7.8 and there were no apps running.

"Another thing I had noticed right after the update to WP 7.8 was that one of the pinned live tiles was empty," Heathclif74 wrote. "I did not really pay further attention to it and I assumed the app would be updated soon enough if this was a real problem. But now I realized, that live-tiles needed to be updated and not much else is using data at that moment."

Like Us on Facebook

Other users have reported tiles not updating correctly and either "bugging out or flickering," as WPSuperFanBoy noted.

HeathCliff74 further explained three ways to update the tile situation

ShellTile.Update(ShellTileData): "This method allows you to manually update the contents of the live-tile from within an app or a background-task of an app. Apps use this to create custom tiles. For example, a twitter client may register a background task, that checks the twitter-feed and write text-updates on the live-tile. I've had no problems using this functionality in both WP 7.5 and WP 7.8."

ShellTileSchedule.Start(): "This method allows to set a URL to a live-tile-image on an external host. The URL is fetched at predefined interfalls. I found that the Shell Tile Scheduler may start behaving erratically under some circumstances. The app from my previous blog-post, did in fact use this method. I have tried to reproduce this behavior in an app of my own. But I have not been able to isolate the situation that triggers this problem. If the problem occurs, there is a serious problem, that may lead to low performance of the phone and high bills from your mobile operator! This behavior seems to be specific to WP 7.8. So far I have not been able to reproduce it on WP 7.5 and WP 8."

HttpNotificationChannel.BindToShellTile(): "This method opens a channel to the Microsoft Notification Servers. External sources can post images, text or counters to the Microsoft Notification Servers. This will be routed to the phone. I found this functionality to be completely broken on WP 7.8. It is possible to send a text or counter. But as soon as an URL for a live-tile-image is sent to the phone, the phone immediately closes the endpoint to the server and nothing is updated. I found that when the app completely registers a new endpoint, the live-tile can sometimes be updated once and then the endpoint is closed again. In my case deleting the PushClient Endpoint registry-keys did not help and even a hard-reset did not resurrect the live-tiles. Live-tile notifications still worked only once, or not at all. On WP 7.5 this method just works as expected. I actually hope I did something wrong here. Or else I don't understand how this could ever get past the Microsoft Quality Assurance department."

Have you updated to the Windows Phone 7.8? Or thought about it until the latest issues? Have you considered or went through Heathcliff74's solution?

Reuters: Apple employee computers hacked, no evidence of stolen data

Last week, Facebook was the target of of a sophisticated hacking attack and now reports have surfaced that Apple's been victimized by a similar scheme. Reuters is reporting that a number of Apple's employees' Macs were infiltrated by a hacking scheme, but "there was no evidence that any data left Apple." To address the cyber security flaw found by the digital ne're-do-wells, Apple has promised a software patch will be released later today [Psst... it's available now.]. So, it appears the folks in Cupertino have things under control, and we've reached out to the company to confirm that's the case. We'll update things here when we hear back.

Update: Apple has provided us with the following statement regarding the matter.

"Apple has identified malware which infected a limited number of Mac systems through a vulnerability in the Java plug-in for browsers. The malware was employed in an attack against Apple and other companies, and was spread through a website for software developers. We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network. There is no evidence that any data left Apple. We are working closely with law enforcement to find the source of the malware.

Since OS X Lion, Macs have shipped without Java installed and as a added security measure OS X automatically disables Java if it has been unused for 35 days. To protect Mac users that have installed Java, today we are releasing an updated Java malware removal tool that will check Mac systems and remove this malware if found."

Meteor explodes over Russia, injuring hundreds (+video)

By Frank Jordans,?Associated Press / February 15, 2013

A 10-ton meteor exploded over Russia, shattering windows and injuring hundreds.

A 10-ton meteor exploded in the sky above Russia on Friday, causing a shockwave that blew out windows injuring some 400 people and sending fragments falling to the ground in the Ural Mountains. Here's a look at those objects in the sky:

What's the difference between a meteor and a meteorite?

Meteors are pieces of space rock, usually from larger comets or asteroids, which enter the Earth's atmosphere. Many are burned up by the heat of the atmosphere, but those that survive and strike the Earth are called meteorites. They often hit the ground at tremendous speed ? up to 30,000 kilometers an hour (18,642 mph) according to the European Space Agency. That releases a huge amount of force.

How common are meteorite strikes?

Experts say smaller strikes happen five to 10 times a year. Large impacts such as the one Friday in Russia are rarer but still occur about every five years, according to Addi Bischoff, a mineralogist at the University of Muenster in Germany. Most of these strikes happen in uninhabited areas where they don't cause injuries to humans.

What caused the damage in Russia?

Alan Harris, a senior scientist at the German Aerospace Center in Berlin, said most of the damage would have been caused by the explosion of the meteor as it broke up in the atmosphere. The explosion caused a shockwave that sent windows and loose objects flying through the air in a radius of several kilometers. By the time the remaining fragments hit the ground they would have been too small to cause significant damage far from the site of impact, he said.

Is there any link to the asteroid fly-by taking place later Friday?

No, it's just cosmic coincidence, according to European Space Agency spokesman Bernhard von Weyhe, who says Asteroid 2012DA14 is unrelated to the meteorite strike in Russia.
